J. C. Madden is a thirty something former soldier and intelligence analyst who has moved to NYC to head security for a luxury boutique hotel on the Upper East Side. Her best friend, Camilla Kessler, works for the Luxury Hotel Association in public relations. Together they investigate the murder of a hotel guest who was an art collector and financial maven.
Renoir’s Revenge has its origin in a true story of financial fraud in the art world. Add motives of fake provenance, marital infidelity and jealousy and the suspects keep piling up. NYPD Detective Steve Riordan needs J.C.’s help as a witness but he tries to limit her involvement in his case. He underestimates her curiosity and tenacity. Together, J.C. and Cam interview hotel guests, associates and family members of the victim, as well as others in the small world of exclusive art dealers. While J.C. is working to gain Detective Riordan’s trust and esteem, Cam becomes friendly with FBI Special Agent Adam Feldman of the Art Crimes Division. The motive for the murder is possibly tied to the original fraud, several cases of faked provenance or even forgery. Sorting it all out requires perseverance, bravery and a couple of lucky breaks.
